  • Nitro System = a card and a lightweight hypervisor
  • The card offloads I/O, networking, block storage, instance storage, security workloads from software hypervisors thus leave users more compute power
  • Security chip on the card is designed to be locked down and no administrative access is allowed
  • The lightweight hypervisor only takes care of CPU and memory allocation
  • EBS volumes appear as NVMe devices on Nitro instances
  • First generation of Nitro instances are t3, c5, m5, r5 (list not exhaustive)
